Stapedectomy

Stapedectomy is a major microscopic surgery, which is used to treat otosclerosis (a disease that causes the stapes of the ear to become fixed, which under normal conditions is a bone that should move freely for the ear to work properly).

Stapedectomy is performed because by removing the stirrup that is fixed to the incus, and replacing it with a prosthesis, its mobility is recovered, and this allows correct sound transmission.

During the first 12 days, the patient should sneeze with his mouth open and avoid blowing his nose. The patient should not get on a plane until at least three weeks after surgery.

The patient may return to work activity when a month has passed. The results are satisfactory, up to 90% of patients will recover their hearing. 1% of patient do not recover any hearing, in cases it is usually due to damage to sensorineural conduction, which is not affected by this surgery.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) does not go away with this surgery, although it may be less audible.
