Mastoidectomy

This is a surgery to remove cells in the hollow, air-filled spaces in the skull behind the ear, inside the mastoid bonce.

These cells are called mastoid cells, Surgery used to be a common way to treat an infection in the mastoid air cells.

In most cases, this condition is caused by an infection in the ear that spreads to the surrounding bone in the skull.

The otolaryngologist will make a cut behind the ear.

A bone drill will be used to gain access to the middle ear cavity that lies behind the mastoid bond or ear tissue will be removed, and the incision will be sutured, and bandage will be applied.

The surgeon may place a drain behind the ear to prevent fluid from collecting around the incision.

The operation may take 2 to 3 hours.
