Tracheotomy

A tracheotomy is a hole that is surgically made in the front of the neck and into the trachea. A tracheostomy tube is placed in the hole to keep it open to allow breathing. The surgical procedure by which this opening is created is called a tracheostomy.

General anesthesia is used, unless the situation is critical. If this happens, anesthesia is injected into the area. Surgical incisions are made to reveal the tough cartilaginous rings that make up the outer wall of the trachea.

The surgeon then creates an opening into the trachea and inserts the tracheostomy tube.

Tracheotomy should be performed when there is respiratory obstruction, at the level of the oropharynx, larynx or upper part of the trachea. Also when there is a very prolonged intubation of the patient, or when there is a need to aspirate pulmonary secretions.

The tracheotomy can be temporary or permanent.
