Adenoid hypertrophy

The adenoids or pharyngeal tonsils are structures that are located in the upper part of the throat (behind the nose), they play an important role in the protection of infections mainly in babies and young children, they act as a filter protecting against bacteria or viruses that enter through the nose when breathing, fighting   infections.

From 7 – 8 years they usually decrease in size as the child grows and begins to develop other types of protection mechanisms, and they play a secondary role.

Adenoid hypertrophy refers to the progressive growth of adenoids and usually causes snoring and difficulty breathing through the nose.

Because the adenoids act as protection against infections, the adenoid become inflamed in respiratory infections, (colds, sinusitis, etc), since they form antibodies to fight infections, as well as in children with allergic problems.

Therefore, in children who suffer from frequent respiratory infections or allergies, the adenoids tend to become inflamed and progressively increase in size.
