Epistaxis (nosebleed)

Epistaxis in nosebleeds that occur in one or both nostrils. It can come from any nasal structure, although the most frequent site is the anterior septum followed by the posterior part of the septum. The amount of bleeding can range from a few drops to very profuse bleeding that can be life- threatening if left unchecked.

The treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition and its cause. There are hemorrhages that can be treated by simply cauterizing the bleeding vessel in the office, a procedure that is not very painful, fast and that allows the patient with a permeable nose to go home; and there are hemorrhages that are more severe and require nasal packing (placement of gauze in the nose). Treatment should always be provided by a certified otolaryngologist.
