It is a hole in front of the ear present from birth (congenital) that continues with a small duct forming a cyst that has the capacity to produce mucus. It can be unilateral and bilateral, and, in many cases, there are other family members who present it (hereditary).
It is due to a defect in the development of the ear. Many times, it goes unnoticed until becomes infected, causing painful inflammation in the area. In other cases, it does not give any symptoms.
When there are no symptoms (no infection, no mucus drainage, etc) surgery is not necessary.
The operation is indicated when infectious signs or mucus drainage appear due to the risk of infection. If this occurs, antibiotic treatment prior to surgery is necessary.
Total removal of the fistulous orifice and the preauricular cyst is necessary.
It must be performed without signs of infection, to avoid recurrence. The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia on a scheduled basis.
