Ranula
A ranula is a type of mucocele, that is a connective tissue swelling found specifically in the floor of the mouth.
It consists of a collection of mucin from the rupture of a salivary gland duct, usually caused by previous local trauma.
The word ranula comes from the latin meaning frog, due to its appearance comparable to the throat of a toad.
A ranula is usually asymptomatic, although it can change size over time, shrinking or swelling, marking a ranula considerably difficult to detect.
The overlying skin tends to remain intact, the mass is not fixed, and it is not painful.
The most frequent symptom is the sensation of a foreign body in the mouth.
Treatment of a ranula includes excision of the upper part of the lesion, in a procedure called marsupialization. Ranula can recur if the affected gland is not removed.
Main symptoms of ranula:
-Sensation of a foreign body in the floor of the mouth.
-Volume increase in the floor of the mouth
-Pain
-Discomfort when eating
