Concha bullosa or pneumatization of the turbinate is the presence of air in the head of a turbinate, frequently located in the middle turbinate.
It is a very common anatomical variant. Sometimes the concha bullosa grows so large that it can obstruct the entry of air into the nostril or the opening of an adjacent paranasal sinus, which can lead to sinusitis.
The presence of a bullous concha can sometimes lead to the deviation of the nasal septum towards the opposite side, generating a decrease in airflow in both nostrils.
During the physical examination in the office through a rhinoscopy, the presence of a bullous shell may be suspected, but the diagnosis is established with a tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses.
It is often an incidental finding. If the bullous shell does not generate symptoms, it is not necessary to treat it.
